I started on acoustic and its good for 3 main reasons
1. It's far cheaper than electric
2. There's no distortion to cover up your mistakes so you learn to be more precise and accurate.
3. The frets are larger and harder to play, so when you make the switch to electric, your fingers have an easier time moving around.

I remember at one point visiting aDawliah and they had everything 50% off. So that's what I thought was the November sale. If it's not that huge I don't think I'll hold out, but I'll visit them.
Also, as for guitars I usually ship from abroad. Although I'm not going to know how it feels, I usually get a really good guitar for a nice price.

It's what I was told by some of the employees. As far as I know, they have a discount in November and may last till March. Discount rates vary, of course, but it's still a discount.
"I can get a x2 better piano for the same price I'm willing to pay now!"
Hi, I'm a musician in Saudi Arabia. lol
What other options are you looking at? Shipping from abroad?
Also, I remember the price for the Roland after discount was a good catch even by US' standards. So you might wanna hold out now.

Do you know for sure that aDawliah makes discounts at November?
I'm looking for a digital piano, so that might be a reason. I can get a x2 better piano for the same price I'm willing to pay now!

Most start out with an acoustic guitar. For starters it's cheaper, so even if you flake out on this hobby you didn't lose a fortune, and second of all the transition into electric is going to be pretty easy.
But I would encourage you to get an electric if A)you have enough money to get a decent one and B)acoustic-played music does not interest you at all. Starting with an acoustic is not a rule set in stone.

How much of a beginner are you?
I've been playing for a year. And looking to jam, I've never jammed with anyone.

I think it's easier to start on an electric. I started on one and it didn't hurt that much as an acoustic would. An acoustic has thicker strings so it'll be harder for a beginner. The decision is mostly determined by the type of music you want to play. If you want acoustic music, get an acoustic. If you want rock and metal just get an electric. And practice on clean tones so you know what you're doing wrong.
I'm self taught by some guitar instructors. I don't feel like posting their names again, but pm me if you want to.
By the way, I'd help if you want any help.

There are some good YouTube instructors. I've been playing for a year, and I can play two shapes of barre chords already. It needs practicing.
Here are some professional internet instructors that know their stuff:
- Justinguitar.com taught by Justin Sandercoe a guitarist for 20 years and he's in the music industry. He's my favorite instructor as he shoots with a professional camera now and explains a lot. Also he has a music theory book for guitarists you can buy if you want which I found useful.
- http://www.creativeguitarstudio.com taught by Andrew Wasson. He really knows his stuff well, and has over 150 videos shot with a professional camera.
- Marty Shwartz has two YouTube channels with over 200 videos. His methods are not as good as the guys above but I found some of his lessons useful.
It's difficult to find good YouTube instructors, as you'll find amateurs shooting videos with their webcam most of the time.
Regarding a guitar instructor here, I don't know any. As I've been looking. But I hope this post helps!

I'm pretty sure they don't have Gibsons, but can you tell me where I can find Gibsons here?
Also, I'm looking for an American Stratocaster here, but all I could find was the ones made in Mexico.

I'd teach you, and you'd pay me huge amounts, but I'm not that good.

Hi,
my next purchase, as I was planning, is going to be in no earlier than november, since at that time AlDawliah makes some discounts on their stuff, and some of the discounts are really nice (The Roland SH201 was 2000SR and dropped down to 990! shame I didn't have the money at the time). So after reading some threads I was wondering if there are any good synth stores in Jeddah? No Yamaha, please. The ones that have a pitch-bend or modulation wheel are kinda pricey.

AlDawiliah, do I have a choice?
And they're not really that bad. I admit their selection is somewhat short compared to shops in other countries, but there's still some nice stuff. As far as synths go they got Roland so that's nice, also some good amps. Don't know much about the guitars, but at least they have the fender and gibson brand names.

Welcome to the board. (I'm new too).
The Beatles turned out to be way awesomer than I could've imagined. Rock on!

Salam Alaikum.
I accidentally bumped into this site as I was searching for a saudi female metal band (sounds odd I know, but I remember reading something about it before and was curious about the music) but this is way better!
I live in Jeddah. Got introduced to metal via Metallica (of course), but currently the music I really love is progressive rock/metal (Gentle Giant, Yezda Urfa, Genesis, Dream Theater), along with jazz and some fusion (The OneUps are great).
Been learning composition and theory on my own for the past couple of years which was great, though I'm not that good at playing anything in particular. Got an acousitc guitar recently which will keep me aloft until I manage to get a Roland synth, which is what I really want.
Anyway, glad again to find this site. I hope to get to know you guys better and hopefully (if I'm ever good enough) we'll get to jam or something.

Hello, I decided to join you my friends here, as I'm a rock fan. I don't listen to metal much, but I've got a few favorites.
My favorite bands are: the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Muse, Nirvana and Radiohead.
I've been playing guitar for a year, taught by the fantastic Internet instructor Justin Sandercoe, and making a somewhat decent progress. Currently owning two instruments: a Squier Strat, and a lovely Yamaha FG 750s.
Rock on, good people!

It's a difficult place to be a western musician, since you can't find anything.
I usually buy mostly everything online, since aDawliah has nothing decent that's not overpriced. Plus, they don't even have warranty on guitars =.
So, where do you buy your instrument/equipment?
And where can you get instrument maintenance?
